Glorious Death

Characters should always prepare themselves for Glorious Deaths

My character and good name are in my own keeping. Life with disgrace is dreadful. A glorious death is to be envied. - Horatio Nelson

In O4E, characters are a valuable resource and not to be wasted. It has been an unwritten rule (that will not be written), that characters can not die from things completely out of their country. If death comes to a character, than it shall be from a Glorious Death.

A Glorious Death is when a character chooses to do something epic and, for whatever reason, fails or dies in the process. Battling a powerful enemy is a cause for a glorious death. Fighting against completely overwhelming odds is a cause for a glorious death. Sacrificing themselves to save the lives of others is a cause of a glorious death.

Being shot in the head from a low-level thief high on death-sticks is not a glorious death. Being shot from a sniper from 500 yards away while the character is walking out of his ship is not a glorious death.

There should never be a reason to take a character's life without it being a Glorious Death.

Exceptions[]

...there are sometimes reasons to kill a character without it being a Glorious Death. Glorious Deaths are not something to cite to make your character pseudo-immortal.

  1. Stupidity: Glorious Deaths are just as much a player's responsibility as it is a DM's. A character that decides to ram his shuttle into a starship as a way to board it is stupid, and will probably die in the process. A player that walks into the UGA Senate building and starts shooting is stupid, and will probably die in the process. A player that throws a fireflush grenade and than hides behind canisters of explosive fuel is stupid, and will probably die in the process. Stupid characters die stupid deaths.
  2. PVP Action: If violent conflict occurs between two characters, it will not always end up as an epic battle. Some characters are more powerful than others (or more prepared) and they may take the advantage quickly and without mercy.
